Rockwood Nature Center
Located at 3401 Courthouse Rd, North Chesterfield, VA 23236. In the heart of Rockwood Park, the Nature Center is the only county-operated nature center in the county. This log cabin-style facility, located near the Ruff House Dog Park, is home to a variety of animals, including a variety of native reptiles and amphibians. Visiting families can engage in a number of nature programs, including hikes, walks, and a beginner whittling class.
Rockwood Nature Center, Chesterfield County’s only county-operated nature center, offers visitors the chance to engage in a number of nature activities. These include hiking, archery and whittling classes. The facility also features an array of native reptiles and amphibians. Its staff is also planning to expand their offerings to visiting families.
The park boasts a number of sports activities, including nine tennis courts and three outdoor basketball courts. There is also an archery range, and the park is dog-friendly. You can explore the park’s five miles of trails for a great view of the wildlife.
The wildlife center’s mission is to inspire people to learn about the natural world. They offer interpretive programs, volunteer opportunities, and volunteer training. Their programs help teachers enlist naturalists for field trips, classroom lessons, and nature studies. In addition, they offer free, family-friendly events during the summer months.
The Wildlife Center was founded in 1985, and the center was designed with a mission to “explore the natural world with a commitment to outdoor recreation.” Visitors can take advantage of the center’s paved and forested uplands trails that wind along a private reservoir. The trails vary in length from 0.2 to 1.5 miles, allowing users of all ages and abilities to enjoy the outdoors.
The Nature Center features hands-on exhibits, including a 30,000 gallon aquarium, and live examples of trees, plants, local fish, and other local animals. Elementary school students can benefit from live examples of plant cycles and water cycles. More here
Visitors can learn about the history of the park, including the original field headquarters for General Robert E. Lee during the summer of 1862. Also, the museum has a gift shop and picnic area. Free events are held during the summer and the weekend in the fall.
In addition to the Nature Center, Rockwood Park also has a playground and an archery range. The Parks and Recreation department will be reopening its recreation centers on Monday, June 15. When the parks are reopened, select recreational programs will be offered. Some will be available to children under 4, while others will be restricted to adults.
Other facilities within the Parks and Recreation system will open up to visitors beginning on Monday, June 15. This includes the Bensley, Ettrick, and Stonebridge recreation centers. A virtual rec program will be available for parents and senior citizens. Virtual tours of nearby historical sites will also be available through the Parks and Recreation Department’s virtual rec program.
Rockwood Nature Center is a great destination for visitors who want to get a taste of the Virginia countryside. Located on 161 acres, the park offers a number of activities for all ages.
