Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia
Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia (BHMCV) is an African American history and cultural center in Richmond, VA. Its mission is to explore, document, and preserve the past, present, and future of African-American history. The museum features a variety of exhibits, educational programs, and events. In addition, the museum hosts the “Forging Freedom, Justice, and Equality” exhibition, which runs from April 29 through October 26, 2017. Located at 122 W Leigh St, Richmond, VA 23220. The BHMCV is open seven days a week. Visitors can learn about the historical significance of African-American culture in VA through educational and interactive displays, special guest speakers, and hands-on activities.
Aside from its permanent exhibits, the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia offers a variety of special and themed exhibits. One such exhibition, “Yesterday’s Stories, Today’s Inspiration,” combines images from the museum’s collection with images from private donors. Another exhibition, “Emancipation Oak,” pays tribute to the site where the first southern reading of the Emancipation Proclamation took place in 1863. The BHMVA also hosts children’s programming. Every May, it hosts the Children’s Book Festival, where 600 second graders from local Richmond public schools come to enjoy book related activities. Some of the fun features include a scavenger hunt, a “funny contest,” and historical portrayals. These events are free of charge to visitors. On its second floor, the BHMVA has added music history.
There is also an extensive collection of African artifacts. The museum also has a Black History Archives Program, which aims to collect and preserve Black cultural heritage.
