Virginia Museum of History & Culture

‍The Virginia Museum of History & Culture is a state-owned museum located at 428 N Arthur Ashe Blvd, Richmond, VA 23220. The VMMCHC was established on July 1, 1953 with the mission to preserve and protect the state’s history, artifacts and natural resources. The museum has three primary areas of focus: history, art, and culture. These themes are woven throughout exhibits that explore topics such as agriculture, architecture, civilian life, industry and transportation. The Museum offers approximately 50 permanent and changing exhibitions each year that explore subjects ranging from the natural world to everyday life in 19th century Richmond. Visitors can also see artifacts from the permanent collection or participate in one of the many educational programs offered at the VMMCHC.

History of the Virginia Museum of History & Culture

The Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC) is one of Virginia’s oldest state museums. It is located in Richmond and opened on July 1, 1953. The VMHC’s first building, a neoclassical structure designed by Richmond architect C. F. Randolph, Jr., opened in 1913. The museum’s current building was completed in 1968 and serves as the headquarters for the state Division of Historic Resources. In 2006, the VMHC began the process of making its collections available on the web. The result is the Virginia Virtual Museum (www.vam.virginia.gov), the largest online collection of state-owned museum artifacts and historic documents in the nation. The VMHC is also one of only two state museums with a research library.

Virginia’s state capital, Richmond, is located in the central section of the state and is easily accessible from most major cities in the eastern United States. The city is located between the James and Appomattox rivers and is one of the oldest and most historic cities in the nation. Richmond, a city located in the southeastern portion of the state, is easy to get to from most major cities in the eastern half of the country. Special events at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture

The VMHC hosts many events throughout the year that aim to share history and culture with people of all ages. Some of these events include lectures, tours, events for children and families, and multi-day programs. The museum also hosts special events geared towards educators, such as educational conferences, workshops and seminars. The VMHC also partners with other organizations to host events outside of Richmond. For instance, the museum recently partnered with the Virginia Holocaust Museum in Charlottesville to host an exhibit on the history of slavery in the United States.

Research Library

The VMHC Research Library is one of the largest research libraries in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The library is home to more than 1.6 million items and includes a wide range of research resources, including books, journals, government documents, microfilm and images. The library is available for researchers from the university and other research facilities. Depending on the research project, researchers may need a license from the library or from the state.

Permanent Collection

The VMHC Permanent Collection features more than 9,000 artifacts from Virginia’s history. This treasure trove of items includes everything from furniture, clothing, food and objects used in daily life to everyday tools, buildings, weapons and more. The collection was recently updated with items from the Jamestown Settlement and the American Civil War. The collection also includes more than 1,000 artifacts from the daily lives of rural and urban Virginians. The collection is housed in five gallery spaces that allow visitors to explore the collection and learn more about Virginia’s history and culture. A great place to also visit is Wilton House Museum
